Luke for Everyone

Questions for Sermon on
January 2-3

Thank you for joining us in our study of Luke. Our prayer is that each of you will follow the weekly readings and join together with others to discuss the questions sent to you each week in this email.  Look for our emails each Monday in preparation for the upcoming sermon the following weekend. For a PDF (printable) version of the Questions click here.

Our hope is that you will see God working in your life and in others around you and you will be able to take your next step in following Jesus.

The sermon this weekend, January 2/3 will be on Luke 14: 25-35. The reading assignment in Luke for Everyone can be found on pages 179-182. The questions below are to be used for your small group meeting that relates to this sermon.

1. How is God changing your life?

2. List some of the benefits you have received as a follower of Christ. Make a list of the costs as well.

OBSERVE
In this teaching, Jesus is addressing large crowds who are following Him. His teaching is meant to challenge all who follow, to a deeper discipleship commitment.

3. In verses 26-27, Jesus challenges those who follow, to place Him above family and even their own lives! How do you think the crowd responded? How do you respond to this difficult teaching? Is it possible? How would your life look different?

4. Read verses 28-30. What aspects of your faith are well built and foundational? What is yet to be finished? What is the cost…what is God asking of you?

5. What exactly does a person need to do to enter through this door? Read verses 31-33. The image Jesus uses is of a king who realizes he is so overmatched that he wisely sends a delegation to negotiate terms of peace. Where/how are you still fighting God? What do you need to give up in order to have peace with God?

6. Read verses 34-35. Salt is used both as a flavoring and a preservative. How would living a life of deeper commitment add more ‘flavor’ to your life? In what ways would a deeper commitment function as a preservative?

ACT
7. What is your next step in following Jesus?

8. Who could you help take their next step in following Jesus?
